This flyswatter kills fascists.
Against all odds (or most odds, at least) this game rocks. Non-linear enough to feel like a true adventure, with elements of sabotage, disguise, puzzles (challenging ones, to boot), whips, punches, and the raiding of tombs, all in service of the greater, engaging mystery. To be clear, I have little-to-no reverence for Indiana Jones. The good movies are fine, the others are… well, if you haven’t heard by now.
I’m not shocked that Machine Games made a game that feels good, I’m shocked that it’s this one. If we ever get another Wolfenstein, it should be in this mold. But I have a feeling this game will be a big enough hit for Disney/LucasFilm/whoever to ask for more. Not only is it a good game, and a good Indy game, but it’s a legitimate GOTY contender (next year, I guess? Provided it doesn’t get forgotten), and the first that Microsoft can claim in… just so long.
Punches feel strong, picking up weapons in the environment and bashing enemies with them feels so great, and if I didn’t know any better I would have been fooled into thinking they time-traveled with a young Harrison Ford more often than not. With its inclusion on Game it’s an absolute no brainer, but if not now, perhaps the PlayStation release in the spring will ensure this game gets the love it deserves.
And, yes, I used a flyswatter to kill a Nazi. 10/5.
