Viktor Antonov, art director of Half-Life 2, has died, thanks to whom one of the most popular video games in history acquired an Eastern European setting and a unique visual style at that time.Antonov's death is reported on the page of the studio Eschatology Entertainment, where he worked in recent years. Antonov was 52 years old.
In the early 2000s, Viktor Antonov worked at Valve Studio, which now owns the world's largest Steam digital game distribution platform, and at that time was developing a sequel to its hit Half-Life (1998). The events of the first part unfolded at a secret scientific base in the USA, which was common for games of the 90s. In Half-Life 2, released in 2004, the main setting was the post-apocalyptic city of City-17, located in an unnamed Eastern European country with characteristic architecture, technology and nature. It was the idea of Viktor Antonov, who was born in Bulgaria.Subsequently, the style of Half-Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
(announced three years earlier, but released three years later) inspired many companies and independent game developers to create projects in the Eastern European setting.
Over the past two decades, Viktor Antonov has worked as an art director and consultant for such popular series as Doom, Fallout and Dishonored.
Half-Life 2, along with two episodes that continue the plot, as well as the online mods Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2, developed by Valve, is considered one of the most successful and significant projects in the history of video games. Despite this, the third part has not yet been released, but it has been overgrown with rumors, memes and fan projects.
