Introduction
Tower of Fantasy, an open-world action RPG flavored with anime-styled visuals and sci-fi elements, is the brainchild of its developer, Perfect World Games. Comparisons with other globally popular open-world games such as Genshin Impact sprung up right after the release, but Tower of Fantasy was able to distinguish itself with more unique mechanisms and an entirely different futuristic atmosphere. Immersive in nature, the game offers exploration, combat, and multiplayer modes, but is sadly plagued with issues that prevent it from becoming a classic.
Story and Worldbuilding
The game is set in a time far removed on planet Aida-a place where mankind clings to existence-on of energy crises. You, as a Wanderer, traverse the ruins of civilization while discovering the secrets of this world. The story becomes very engaging, interspersed with cutscenes and in-game dialogues, maintaining your interest. However, several important plot points in the game seem to be rushed in their development and leave the player craving for more depth.
Gameplay and Combat
Tower of Fantasy features one of the strongest combat systems in the genre-wild dynamic combat. Opposite to the rigid program of RPGs, weapon swapping in battle is done in real-time; thus it adds a lot of variance and strategy to any given encounter. Melee and ranged combat combined with skills really spice up encounters. Constant weapon and skill customization of your character encourages different playstyles, which is a great thing.
On the other hand, the input balancing is a little shaky. Some enemies interrupt the flow of battle with seemingly unpredictable attack patterns, while other bosses put up one unfair fight after another because of their twisted mechanics. Sometimes you have to deal with hit detection errors and input delays that can get annoying enough to spoil combat.
Exploration and Open World Design
Set in a gigantic open world dotted with panoramic scenes-a futuristic city here, an arid desert there-Tower of Fantasy allows you to climb, glide, and swim from point A to point B, adding flavor to exploration. The inclusion of vehicles and mounts makes traveling easier, entering a truly unique sci-fi sensation to the very air of the game.
Unfortunately, the empty feeling of the open world sets in from time to time. Indeed, there are puzzles, there are chests, and there are random encounters, but many environments would have been more pleasing if the game had added more content relevant beyond their very visual aspect. Moreover, the environmental interactions-falling and climbing-often become clunky just because the control scheme is not precise enough.
Multiplayer and Social Features
The MMO-like features of Tower of Fantasy create a unique sense of identity away from the competition among the titles. Players can team up in world bosses, dungeons, and PvP battles. The co-op is well made here; players can in seamlessly with friends or random players. Then you have the guild system that provides a social bond and further encourages teamwork.
The other side is that the lagging and connectivity issues may spoil the fun. Players have reported disconnections quite frequently, and also slow server response times, which may annoy players playing cooperatively.
Graphics and Performance
Tower of Fantasy is truly an eye candy. The anime-style character designs are detailed, and the breathtaking vistas are truly Sci-Fi worlds. Animations are extremely smooth and fluid, especially in combat. The game performs reasonably well on high-end devices, while smartphone s are already facing performance drops, making it wipe, and heating issues.
We also have bugs and glitches, ranging from visual glitches to ones that actually break games. While a lot of these problems have been fixed in updates, they still concern many players.
Gacha System and Monetization
Just like any other RPG for mobile devices, Tower of Fantasy also contains an in-game gacha to get characters and weapons. The rates are relatively fair, when compared with other games, yet still the monetization model can feel a bit predatory at times. Given the right conditions, free-to-play players can grind for currency, but it will be a tedious and slow process.
Pros and cons
✅Pros
✅Involved combat style with swapping of arsenal weapon in real time.
✅Beautiful sci-fi aesthetics open world.
✅Strong multiplayer with co-op and PvP features.
✅Personal touches to character customization.
✅Frequent updates and events for freshness for the game.
❌Cons
❌The game is buggy and unpolished and comes with frequent glitches.
❌Performance is poor on low-end devices.
❌Open world gameplay is repetitive, bringing in little diversions.
❌Grindy feel of Gacha system on the free-to-play s.
❌Connectivity problems affecting the multiplayer modes.
Final Verdict
Tower of Fantasy is gorgeous, with several rounds of combat mechanics and an incredibly broad world but ravaged with glitches and balancing issues. It's worth a shot if you love open-world RPGs and the little roughness doesn't bother you. But it might be one of those games where you find bugs and inconsistencies frustrating should you seek a perfectly flawless experience. With continued improvement and update roles, this game has potential to be truly amazing, but as it stands, it has to settle for promising but very flawed.
